Akron Children’s Hospital to open new office combining Portage practices
Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics will move its recently combined Kent and Ravenna practices to the hospital’s new Portage Health Center on Tuesday.
The primary care office will be the first service to open in the new 29,500-square-foot health center on state Route 59 in Franklin Township, across from Walmart, according to a news release from the hospital.
The pediatricians’ offices will take up about 13,000 square feet of the space, said Ben Teske, Akron Children’s Hospital director of primary care.
The practice will now be known as Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Portage.
The office features 23 large exam rooms. Providers from the Kent and Ravenna offices will continue to see patients there. The office will be staffed by board-certified pediatricians, nurse practitioners and pediatric nurses.
Additional pediatric specialties will be added to the building in the future, with outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational and speech therapies, to open at a later date.
Teske said that portion will use up another 9,000 square feet.
“We have shelf space in the building for additional services, to grow in the future,” he said.
Another feature planned for the facility is something similar to an urgent care, said Teske.
“We’re actually planning a Quick Care, which is meant for minor injuries and illnesses,” he said.
At this point, the hospital hasn’t yet determined when other services will be moving into the new Franklin Township facility, Teske said.
As society emerges from the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, the hospital is “remobilizing in phases,” he said.
“We just don’t have that all they way nailed down yet,” he said.
The new building will provide convenience to Portage County families, as well as more advanced treatments, said Michael Mainwaring, Akron Children’s Hospital’s president of community care.
“We are excited to provide pediatric care in this beautiful new space,” he said. “We understand how important it is to have convenient access to health care, especially for today’s busy families. This new health center will allow us to bring more pediatric services to the Kent and Ravenna area so families don’t need to travel far for exceptional care.”
The nearly $10 million health center will be donated to Akron Children’s by the project’s developer, A. Altman Company. The health center’s welcome center will be named the Altman Family Welcome Center in recognition of the gift.
“We are honored to support the children and families of Portage County through this donation,” said A. Altman Co. Managing Partner Rick Altman. “The new Akron Children’s Health Center, Portage is bringing important services together under one roof — and we are proud to have played a small role in its development.”
The office is accepting new patients. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. For appointments, call 330-543-2778.
