It’s really amazing that over the span of three decades Cameron Mitchell has opened 100 restaurants; the restaurateur who has become synonymous with Columbus doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In 2023, he opened two new Columbus eateries, and this year he’s on track to open two more (and that’s just locally). So it seems fitting that his 100th restaurant, an Italian spot appropriately named Cento (Italian for 100), stands out among the new Columbus culinary offerings of 2023.

In terms of legacies, Cento has a lot to live up to. The restaurant space on Third Street in German Village was the longtime home of the beloved G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar. Mitchell’s doing right by that legacy so far, assembling his usual expert team to craft a winning menu, handsome wine list and dynamic hospitality. The space itself has been lavishly refurbished, with a gorgeous bar, plush booths and chandeliers. A bright and airy garden room looks out over the brick-lined terrazzo with a fountain and a fireplace, sure to rival popular neighborhood patios like Barcelona’s and Lindey’s.

As expansive as Mitchell’s work tends to be, the menu at Cento is surprisingly focused (and pricey), topping 20 Italian dishes at dinner and ranging from antipasto and salads to pastas and entrées. It invites diners to celebrate Mitchell’s enduring love of Italian cuisine through housemade burrata, Caesar salads assembled tableside, rich risottos, grilled branzino, chicken saltimbocca and a much-talked-about veal Parmesan weighing in at $66. There’s no debate, however, that any meal at Cento should finish with a bite of panna cotta or tiramisu, paired with a shot of espresso or an affogato.

If You Order One Thing

Pastas are a favorite at Cento; Mitchell has said he and his wife are especially partial to them. Try the spiraled girelle with eggplant and ricotta salata, a firmer preparation of the white cheese.

PERRY TWP. – Goodwill is preparing to launch its seventh store in Stark County, and doors will be open to thrift shoppers later this week.

Goodwill’s new store is slated to open at 9 a.m. Friday in the Perry Town Center, 5139 Tuscarawas St. W, within combined space previously occupied by Clean Eatz, Great Clips,The UPS Store and Anytime Fitness.

Clean Eatz and Great Clips have transitioned to another building within the plaza closer to Tuscarawas Street.

The new Goodwill kicks off Friday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed a special prize giveaway to the first 100 people in the door, according to Maureen Ater, vice president of marketing and development for Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland andEast Central Ohio.

Ater touted the new store’s larger size and improved parking area as reasons for relocating from the now closed store at 4510 Tuscarawas St. W, which was across the road from FishersFoods.

“This move is exciting. Thrift shopping is becoming more popular now, especially with a lot of prices going up,” Ater said. “Young people and college kids are getting more involved, too.”

Goodwill will be plaza neighbors with Marc’s and Aldi, and the business will be positioned just north of AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. The new store has about 10,000 square feet of retail space, nearly 2,000 more than the previous Perry store.

“Perry has been a great neighbor to us with great shopping donors and customer base,” Ater said. “We didn’t have to test the market here. It was already a great area.”

Two dozen employees will be assigned to the new Goodwill shop.

The Perry store will feature a new “Goodwill Select” display adjacent to the checkout counters. The display will feature higher end merchandise, such as jewelry, purses and shoes, Ater said.

In addition, the new store will have a “Wired-Up” center, in which donated computers, gaming systems, cellphones and tablets will be refurbished and resold.

Jacob Laboy is a Goodwill worker who will lead the “Wired-Up” team.

“We’ll clean and test (these devices), fix what we can, erase any data and resell affordable stuff to people,” Laboy said.

Items typically offered at Goodwill stores include men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, appliances, cookware sets, bicycles, furniture, glassware and holiday décor.

Goodwill also carries merchandise like shoes, socks, headphones and phone chargers, giving folks a chance to purchase multiple items in a single spot.

The store and drive-thru, drop-off center will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday throughSaturday. Sunday hours run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Cameron Mitchell calls upcoming German Village Cento restaurant ‘passion project’ https://www.aaltmanco.com/cameron-mitchell-calls-upcoming-german-village-cento-restaurant-passion-project/ Mon, 22 Aug 2022 16:11:00 +0000 https://www.aaltmanco.com/?p=83898

Cameron Mitchell’s new German Village restaurant won’t rival the restaurateur’s Las Vegas outpost in size, but it may in personal affinity.

The Columbus-based restaurant group has long wanted a site in German Village. With work on Cento at 595 S. 3 St.underway, the group’s founder shared his thoughts on what guests will experience when it opens next year.

“I’d put this in Manhattan without batting an eye,” Mitchell said. “It’s a true passion project.”

Among the factors that have Mitchell excited are the upscale menu and the atmosphere both in the fully remodeled inside and the expanded patio that will rival some of the city’s best outdoor dining.

Mitchell is careful when discussing the menu, both because details are yet to be released and because he doesn’t want to be seen as criticizing other Italian offerings around town, including his own.

The Cameron Mitchell Restaurants portfolio includesMarcella’s and Martini Modern Italian as well as Valentina’s, another coming-soon concept that will open at Bridge Parkin Dublin next year.

What Mitchell is willing tease are high-quality food options and interesting presentations. Cento is an idea he’s had for several years while he’s searched for the right space to put it.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants always has maintained a balance between expanding its handful of growth concepts— Ocean Prime and sister company Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern — with new creations here in the home market.

Central Ohio is home to 20 Cameron Mitchell restaurants(and counting) spread across 15 nameplates. Rusty Bucket has 10 of its 22 locations here as well.

The company expects to have opened five new restaurants from 2021 to 2022, with as many as seven new openings next year.

Mitchell said he’s already begun planning for 2024.

In addition to Cento and Valentina’s, The Pearl is expanding to Tampa, Florida. As announced last week, the 18 OceanPrime will open in Las Vegas. Other openings and new concepts have to be announced.

Ocean Prime still has big potential as well. Mitchell said recent focus has been on “trophy locations” in major markets, such as Las Vegas. Houston is next up on the wishlist.

But the broad goal is two or three new locations a year.

Though not a traditional steakhouse, Mitchell drew a parallel to brands like Ruth’s Chris, Morton’s and TheCapital Grille, each of which has more than 60 locations across the country at least.

Where Ocean Prime winds up — 25, 30, 60, more — will be determined by what makes sense, but the company sees clear potential beyond 18.

While Ocean Prime isn’t the local headline grabber (it’sColumbus location is billed s Mitchell’s Ocean Club), it’s the big business for the company overall. The brand generates annual average unit sales of $12 million each, among the restaurant industry’s top performers.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ German Village restaurant’s proposed more than 1,800-square-foot outdoor dining space was approved by the village’s commission April 6.

The restaurant group is converting the defunct G. Michael’s Bistro and Bar location at 595 S. 3rd St. into a new Italian restaurant, Cento, with a proposed opening before the end of 2022. The previous restaurant had a small, six-space parking lot, which is being converted into a patio. The original G. Michael’s patio was only around 600-square-feet, according to Columbus Business First.

The name, Cento, is Italian for “100,” and will be the 100th location the company has launched in its 29 years of business.

Other plans include an outdoor bar, a fountain and keeping a tree that has grown up around the existing patio and building.

The new Cameron Mitchell restaurant slated to take over the former location of G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar has remained nameless to the public throughout the early stages of its development.

Until recently, that is.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants representatives told 614NOW that the new concept–which CMR announced will be an upscale Italian eatery in late 2021–will go by the name Cento.

Pronounced “CHEN-TOE”, the name of the new concept means 100 in Italian.

“The name means 100 in Italian – fitting as this will be CMR’s 100th restaurant,” said a CMR representative. “The name was selected after asking associates to submit name ideas, and Corporate Chef Jamie Kline submitted Cento.”

Cento will be located at 595 3rd St. in German Village, in the former location of G. Michael’s, which permanently shuttered last fall after 23 years. You can take a look at the recently-approved plans for the restaurant’s new patio space here.

An opening date for Cento has not been announced yet, although CMR believes an opening in late 2022 is possible.

Cameron Mitchell’s upcoming German Village restaurant now has a name: Cento.

The restaurant is expected to open at 595 S. 3rd St., possibly as early as late this year.

The Columbus-based restaurant company asked its associates for name suggestions. Corporate Chef Jamie Kline’s was the ultimate choice.

Cento (pronounced CH-ENTO, not SEN-TOH) is Italian for 100. The planned fine dining Italian restaurant will be the 100th location the company has opened in its 29 years.

(That 100 restaurant figure includes 22 Mitchell’s Fish Market and Mitchell’s Steakhouse locations that were sold in 2007 as well as the handful of restaurants the company has closed over its nearly three decades.)

President and COO David Miller previously described the German Village concept as an an intimate space with a fine dining menu of classic Italian cuisine. Further food and beverage details will be shared closer to opening.

The space, which had been G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar, is beginning to take shape.

The German Village Commission earlier this month gave its blessing to the patio plans for the project.

Creating the outdoor space will involve eliminating the small, six-space parking lot that the previous restaurant used. The current 600-square-foot patio will be expanded to more than 1,800 square feet. A greenery-covered fence along the sidewalk, a pergola covering part of the outdoor space and a fountain feature are in the plans.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants has more than 60 locations today, including more than 20 local restaurants open across 15 brands, plus the 17-unit Ocean Prime chain and the 22-location Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern sister company.

Beyond Cento, other new restaurants in development include Valentina’s, another Italian concept coming to Bridge Park in Dublin, and a new The Pearl restaurant in Tampa, Florida, the first expansion of that brand outside Central Ohio.

Recent additions in the past year-plus have included El Segundo Mexican Kitchen in the Short North, Del Mar Naples in Florida and both an Ocean Prime and the Prime Social Rooftop in Kansas City.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ new German Village restaurant will have nearly triple the patio space of its predecessor.

Plans for that outdoor space were approved Wednesday by the German Village Commission, which praised the proposed design for its ability to keep the pedestrian feel along South 3rdStreet.

Further details about the new eatery are still to be released, including its name, but check out the slideshow with this story for a peek at the patio plans as drawn up by Columbus-based Design Collective.

The small, six-space parking lot that had been used by the previous restaurant will be converted to a patio, bringing the restaurant’s outdoor dining area to more than 1,800 square feet. The original G. Michael’s patio was only around 600 square feet.

Plans include an outdoor bar, a fountain and keeping the tree that’s grown up around the existing building and patio.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants presented multiple look options to the commission Wednesday night, including one that would’ve built a brick wall with an arched entrance alongside the current building.

The company’s preferred design, which included a greenery-covered fence and a pergola, was the commission’s preference.

“I think you nailed it,” a commission member said during the presentation.

President and COO David Miller spoke with Columbus Business First earlier this year about the company’s plans for the space.

The company had been looking for opportunities in German Village for around 15 years.

“We’re willing to be patient to find the right spot,” Miller said. “We looked in New York City for seven years. Now we finally found the right opportunity in German Village. We’re excited to be part of the great restaurant community there.”

It’s not the only new Italian restaurant in development at Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. The company is bringing a new concept called Valentina’s to Bridge Park in Dublin this year.

The former G. Michael's Bistro & Bar in German Village will become an upscale Italian concept by Cameron Mitchell Restaurants.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants will take over the former home of G. Michael’s for an unnamed Italian fine dining concept expected to open this fall.

The German Village space on Third Street  is currently under development. It’s a prime location for the company, which has been seeking a German Village space for the past 15 years.

Previous occupants G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar closed in 2021 after 23 years in business, a blow to fans of the independent upscale-casual restaurant.

Now, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants looks to add the space to its 23 Columbus-area locations and 19 concepts nationwide.

Cameron Mitchell's restaurant group will take over the Third Street space formerly occupied by G. Michael's.

“(The location) provides excellent visibility and a great opportunity to expand the culinary scene of the community,” reads a statement from Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. “German Village features some of the best restaurants in the city, and this fact, as well as the location of the building in the heart of the village, are why we are excited to build our newest concept here.”

More details are expected as the project progresses.

This is the second Italian fare concept announced by Cameron Mitchell Restaurants in the last year following Valentina’s, expected to debut in Dublin’s Bridge Park later this year.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants is cooking up something new for German Village.

The Columbus-based dining group will take over the former G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar space 595 S. 3rd St., where it will open a fine dining Italian restaurant. (No name has been released yet.)

“We’re blessed with a lot of great restaurants,” President and COO David Miller said. “But we’ve always had one gaping hole – German Village.”

MIller said the company has been looking for an opportunity in German Village for about 15 years, but they could never find the right fit. One of those was the former Max & Erma’s space further south on 3rd Street, where it contemplated doing an Italian eatery almost five years ago (and well before the celebrated Chapman’s Eat Market took the spot).

That’s the same kernel of an idea the restaurant group is finally developing this year.

“We’ve always wanted to do fine dining Italian,” Miller said. “Something warm and cozy with a nice outdoor space.”

The opportunity was brought to Cameron Mitchell Restaurants after G. Michael’s closed last fall after 23 years.

Miller said they’ll take the first floor and use some of the second floor for storage. The rest of the second floor, which had been event space for G. Michael’s, is going to become offices for a new tenant.

The company hopes to expand and improve the patio as well.

It’s bringing a new concept called Valentina’s to Bridge Park in Dublin this year.

But Miller said the two spaces are not the same.

Valentina’s will be more of a polished-casual space focused on Northern Italian cuisine, with pizzas, fresh pasta and a “lively atmosphere.”

The German Village space will be more intimate, with more of a fine dining feel. And the menu will be classic Italian cuisine. Details on that are being developed now.

“We’re a long way from what it will be, but this is going to get a lot of love and a lot of attention,” Miller said.

The new Italian restaurant will be Cameron Mitchell Restaurants 19th concept spread among 41 restaurants nationwide. It’ll be the company’s 23rd restaurant in Central Ohio.

CANTON – City Council has agreed to transfer the Arthur J. Cirelli building to the Canton Community Improvement Corporation so that developers can establish a regional behavioral health care center.

Representatives from Akron Children’s Hospital and A. Altman Company met with city officials earlier this month to discuss the plans for 630 30th St. NW, according to a council memo.

Brian Lapolla — vice president of facilities, planning, construction and public safety for Akron Children’s — described the planned facility as a counseling clinic for children between the ages of 7 and 18.

Ready for patients:Ready for patients

“Our goal is to provide them the care that they need to operate, not only in their school and social networks, but also to become very productive adults,” he said Monday.

Lapolla expects the outpatient clinic to receive 14,000 visits in the first five years. He said a number of Akron Children’s patients are from Stark County, so the hospital requested the developers’ help in finding a location closer than Akron.

“This was centrally located,” he said.

The Canton-based A. Altman Company already has developed five facilities for Akron Children’s, managing partner Richard Altman said. The 30th Street NW project will use Hasenstab Architects, which designed the hospital’s health center in North Canton.

“I think what you’ll see is a brand new building looking very, very similar to most other Akron Children’s buildings,” Altman said.

Why sell a Canton building for $1?

The Cirelli building housed the city’s utility billing, information technology, dispatch and SWAT/VICE operations until 2019. Canton leaders decided to move those employees rather than make an estimated $1.15 million in repairs.

Canton City Council on Monday authorized the mayor or director of public service to transfer the property to its economic development arm, the CCIC, for subsequent transfer to the A. Altman Company for $1.

The council memo from Deputy Mayor Fonda Williams and councilmen John Mariol, D-7, Frank Morris, D-9, Louis Giavasis, D-at large, and Bill Smuckler, D-at large, described the $1 price tag as “well justified.” They cited $2.9 million in proposed building improvements, the creation of 22 jobs, and an estimated income tax revenue of more than $3 million over the course of 30 years.

The property transfer includes a condition that developers enter a long-term lease with a medical entity for children’s behavioral health services. If they do not, the property will revert to the CCIC.

The council voted after the first reading of the ordinance, which would typically receive three readings, at the request of Akron Children’s Hospital. The center is expected to open in January 2023.

Good news for Canton

“We are honored to have Akron Children’s coming to Canton,” Mayor Thomas Bernabei said.

Several council members praised the move and Canton’s administration for facilitating the arrangement.

“It’s going to be a huge asset,” said Councilman Louis Giavasis, D-at large.

Councilman Frank Morris, D-9, called the development, which involves no tax incentives, “a blessing” for the city.

“The facilities are unbelievable,” Councilman John Mariol, D-7, said about Akron Children’s Hospital.
